Job Description

Primary Function of Position

As a member of the Human Factors Research (HFR) team, the Human Performance Engineer (HPE) leads the development of human subjects research that ground recommendations, requirements, claims through evidence generation with future technology innovation.

Collaborates closely with mechanical engineers, system analysts, product managers, clinical engineers, product designers, interaction designers, user researchers, and human factors engineers at all stages of development.

As part of early development project teams, HPE conduct research to gain a deep understanding of human performance capabilities; analyze and characterize usability considerations; conduct concept evaluations to realize the impact of design concepts on user workflow, behavior and performance; translate user needs into usability requirements; and develop new tools to measure UX and inform design.

This role functions in the ambiguous, strategic early stages of product development, so the position requires an ability to change direction quickly, from high-level strategic thinking to detailed requirements and data collection with an appetite for rapid prototyping and minimum viable product mentality, while maintaining high standards for experimental research.

Roles And Responsibilities

  • Collect, synthesize and present detailed human performance data regarding how users interact with Intuitive products through various research techniques including controlled experimentation, simulations, direct observations, workflow analyses, and persona development.
  • Analyze and characterize usability considerations, including physical, cognitive, social and organizational aspects of human factors that influence performance while interacting with Intuitive products.
  • Design, execute and report on human performance studies to realize the impact of design concepts on user workflow, behavior and performance. Write and execute study protocols.
  • Strong data analytical skills, including processing, inspecting, transforming, modeling, as well as basic descriptive and inferential analysis
  • Reporting findings at all organizational levels.
  • Draft usability requirements.
  • Develop, integrate, and apply novel instrumentation to generate UX metrics and human performance data to inform concept development.
  • Reinforce a human centered design approach across the organization.
  • Represent the Human Factors function on core teams for large projects.
  • Coordinate human factors efforts across projects involving several sub-systems.
  • Manage human performance engineering activities within development projects and provide schedules and status to product managers and engineering project managers.
  • Lead or support the development of new Human Factors processes including the creation and maintenance of department operating procedures.


Skill/Job Requirements:

  • Minimum Education: BS in Human Factors Engineering, Cognitive Psychology, Biomechanical Engineering, Computer Science with human-computer interface (HCI) emphasis, Human Centered Design, or related field. MS or PhD strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 6 years relevant Human Factors/Usability/Human Performance Engineering experience in product development industry
  • Experience in research on Ergonomics, Biomechanics, a plus.
  • Experience in research on Cognitive Sciences, a plus.
  • Experience in Computer Science or Computational Psychology, a plus
  • Experience in Differential Psychology, a plus.
  • Experience with bioinstrumentation, a plus.
  • Experience in medical device, or similar regulated industry, a plus.
  • Ability to process and analyze large quantitative datasets.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize large quantities of data from mixed methods research into usable communications.
  • Ability to lead usability engineering activities (i.e. establishing usability requirements; creating usability risk analyses, test protocols, and test reports) for a complex, software-controlled electro-mechanical medical device.
  • Ability to interface with customers in a highly professional manner.
  • Superior ability to write accurate, clear, and concise protocols, reports, operating procedures, etc. in a timely manner.
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work with and across various groups and levels of management within the organization, including other engineering groups, marketing, clinical engineering, and regulatory. Excellent collaboration skills.
  • Ability to apply user-centered design and human factors engineering principles to product research, development, and design.
  • Ability to travel internationally as well as domestically (up to 25%)

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The target salary ranges are listed.

Base Salary Range Region 1:$135,300 - $194,700

Base Salary Range Region 2: $115,000 - $165,600
