Summary — see instructions for how to apply at the end

Deadline: Sunday 24 July 2022 in all time zones

Description: We are looking for a talented and experienced Head of Product & Design to join the leadership team at Our World in Data.

In this role you will manage your own team and lead both the design process and product roadmap. This role will have a huge impact on our team and our work — which is why we are looking for someone experienced and very well aligned with our mission.

Contract type: Full-time, flexible hours

Location: Remote (with office space available in Oxford)

Most of us are in the EU/African/US-East time zones and our core working hours are from noon to 5 pm London time. You can be based anywhere as long as you are regularly available during our core working hours and you have a very good Internet connection.

Interview process: Upon receipt of your application we will review it and may contact you for one or more initial interviews. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to respond to a design brief and present their responses back to the leadership team. We expect the response to take 1-2 days of work, for which you will be paid.

Compensation: Compensation will be discussed early in the selection process and will depend on your profile and experience.

Key responsibilities

  • Define and own the product roadmap for Our World in Data, including the publication’s structure, user experience, visual branding, and possibilities for visualising data and presenting research
  • As part of the leadership team, help craft and execute our strategic goals as an organisation
  • Act as glue between teams, helping us to navigate and prioritise projects given the dependencies between teams and the different ways in which authors, data managers and engineers engage with the public
  • Hire and lead a product and design team that can take our publication to a new level
  • Improve our project management process, especially how we define, prioritise and evaluate projects that we select for development
  • Develop a process for performing and incorporating user research that enhances and lifts our work without slowing us down
  • Maintain and promote an ongoing awareness of the digital publication and data journalism landscape

Skills and experience

  • 6+ years experience in product management or design leadership in a relevant high-tech industry
  • Excellent understanding of Our World In Data’s mission
  • Excellent design intuition, the ability to quickly identify the heart of a problem and to iterate on potential solutions
  • Prior experience recruiting and managing a team
  • Strength in managing projects and overall organisational skills
  • Excellent command of English
  • Bonus: prior experience growing a small organisation
  • Bonus: prior experience in digital publishing
  • Bonus: familiarity with data-focused projects and academic work

Differences when working with us

Our World In Data is driven by a vision, the vision that we and projects like us can become a new foundation for how people navigate, understand, and ultimately try to tackle the world’s major pressing challenges. We’ve seen the impact of this work during the pandemic, on how people understand energy and climate, and this year we hope likewise to serve as an impartial reference for major topical issues such as poverty, biodiversity, mental health, democracy, and conflict.

We are a sustainably funded non-profit, meaning we are not driven by fundraising needs, commercial needs, or even the desire to maximize traffic to our publication. Instead, we are driven by our vision. This changes how we think about user research. If you join us, it will be an important challenge for you to work out how to incorporate user research to help steer us towards greater impact without veering off-course or diluting our core values.

In this role, you will have the chance to play a big part in shaping Our World in Data as a publication, in turn helping millions of people each month to form a more accurate worldview and encouraging them to work on the largest problems and thereby change the world for the better.

  • 🌎 Mission driven: motivated above all by our mission to unlock the world’s data and help the world tackle its big problems
  • ⚖️ Economic: considers which changes will bring the team the most benefit when weighed against the time and effort involved
  • 👂 Listener: develops alignment by fully engaging with the people around them and the problems they face
  • 🧐 Opinionated: able to synthesise complex topics and come to independent conclusions
  • ✍️ Communicator: clear and excellent communicator regardless of medium
  • 🦸‍♀️ Authentic: able to foster team belonging and trust by being themselves, and encouraging the same in others

Fair recruiting, flexible working

We actively welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and strive to use fair criteria in hiring. Our team hours are also flexible enough to ensure that those of us with children can manage pick-up, drop-off, sicknesses, and the regular responsibilities that come with everyday life.
