Position Focus:

Yale University seeks an exceptional People Data Scientist to join our People Analytics team, part of the HR Innovation & Strategic Support (HRISS) unit. In this pivotal role, you will play a key part in transforming our people data infrastructure, driving valuable insights that shape workforce decisions.


The Yale HRISS team fosters a collaborative and innovative environment, dedicated to supporting the university's evolving human capital management needs. Leveraging advanced technology, we streamline processes, enhance data accuracy, and deliver actionable insights to colleagues across campus.


As a data enthusiast with a passion for solving problems and uncovering hidden trends, you will play a pivotal role in strategic analytics initiatives, people research, and experimentation. You will design and implement advanced statistical models, algorithms, and data visualization tools to extract actionable insights from complex HR data. Your expertise in building robust analytics products will empower our business leaders to make informed talent decisions across the employee lifecycle from recruitment to retention and optimize workforce strategies.


Working closely with the HR leaders, University leaders, business partners and other stakeholders, you will leverage your expertise in quantitative analytics, research design, consulting, and soft skills to diagnose business needs and identify areas for improvement in the areas such as employee engagement, performance, retention, diversity, and talent acquisition. Through strategic collaboration you will create compelling data visualizations and dashboards that communicate insights and recommendations, driving data-driven enhancements to HR processes and programs.


Continuously improving our reporting and analytics framework, you will contribute to the roadmap, document internal processes, and standardize metrics and definitions. Additionally, you will build tools and audits that enhance business intelligence, improve data integrity, and increase efficiency in reporting processes. This role is once a week in the office in New Haven, CT (Open to remote candidate based in Eastern standard time zone).


Essential Duties

1. Creates a relational database from existing study data currently stored in multiple data sources. Designs comprehensive and relational databases with advance knowledge of relevant applications impacting on the data analyses and reporting.

2. Develops and documents operational procedures for the collection, editing, verification and management of study data. Documents all study data files, data structure and relationships, variable definitions and data codes. Writes detailed specifications for analysis files and performs consistency checks.

3. Develops and implements relevant statistical programs to incorporate data from multiple studies/projects.

4. Organizes and creates documents and tables related to datasets; communicates with data sources about data accuracy and data dictionary.

5. Evaluates and analyzes data using accepted statistical techniques and statistical analysis software. Performs descriptive and multivariate statistical analyses of data, using computer software.

6. Uses advanced statistical knowledge to provide support in managing and analyzing data.

7. Designs and implements quality control measures to ensure accurate collection and processing of data. Ensures the integrity of databases used in analyses through development of essential data cleaning and checks, and data back-ups.

8. Responsible for the documentation and transmission of study data. Ensures that data are collected and completed in a timely manner at each site location.

9. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Master’s degree in statistics, computer science, business administration or a related field and two years of experience in data management and analysis or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with data collection and in coordinating efforts of multiple groups.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Experience with tools and languages such as SQL, R, Python, Tableau, Power BI or Visier, and in the design and implementation of data pipelines that support the continuous delivery of insight.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Strong knowledge of research design, data collection methods, data quality assurance, descriptive and inferential statistics, and data visualization.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

At least 2 years of experience in data analysis, preferably in a people analytics or HR context.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Experience in advanced statistical methods around hypothesis testing, clustering, machine learning predictions, and text mining.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Familiarity with statistical analysis, predictive modeling, and machine learning concepts.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Master’s or PhD in a quantitative field where research and quantitative methods have direct applicability to people research in organizations (data science, statistics, economics, quantitative psychology, organization behavior, social psychology, sociology, bioinformatics/biostatistics, neuroscience, operations research, statistics, management science, etc.)
