Science Pipelines Developer

The Department of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton invites applicants to fulfill the role of Science Pipelines Developer.

This position will work on a variety of projects in survey science and software development for the reduction, analysis, interpretation, and testing of photometric and spectroscopic data from very large surveys including but not limited to the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey, the NAOJ Hyper Suprime Cam and the Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph, and play a role with WFIRST (the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope).

The term of this appointment is 1 year, with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory performance and funding.


The responsibilities of this position in regards to these surveys include:

developing pipelines and algorithms using synthetic source injection to assess overall pipeline performance; running pipeline traks with batch processing on the shared clusters at SLAC or another identified supercomputing cluster site; creating plots to visualize pipeline data products; selecting characterisitic metrics to quantify algorithmic performance and managing version control on GitHub. The position is expected to present progress reports and results periodically at team meetings and conferences.


The ideal candidate will combine a strong research record with software development experience in Python and/or C++, and a background in optical or radio Astronomy at faint levels, CCD or radio data, handling of large data sets, and/or image and spectroscopic analysis. An undergraduate degree in Astronomy, Physics, Computer Science or related field is required.
