Metallurgical Engineer (Materials Engineer)

Job Purpose

Lead/Support investigation of moderately complex quality problems/change point for internal and external customers through metallurgical evaluation including testing, failure analysis, material confirmation or other material related items.


Key Accountabilities

  • Using engineering analysis and data collection to assure material conformance to spec and causes of product failure
  • Manage/participate in investigations for quality problems to determine responsibility, root cause and countermeasure through failure analysis of engine components and assemblies
  • Summarization and presentation of analysis results to all levels of organization and other Honda divisions
  • Ability to communicate with customers and outside departments, and other regions
  • Coordinate and lead plant wide projects to identify Q concerns and establish team and set plan to investigate Q concerns
  • Support/Advise/Mentor/Lead other associates on problem analysis projects
  • Establish and carry out analysis plans on powertrain problems, by utilizing engineering theory/experience and interfacing with functional experts and other department representatives for coordination of schedules and activities
  • Evaluate functional impact of manufacturing process and/or specification variations

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelors Degree Material Science, Metallurgical, or Welding Engineering
  • 5 years’ experience in Quality, Manufacturing or Material Analysis (heat treat, casting, welding, failure analysis or related lab environment)

  • Lead / support inter-department teams on projects related to quality concerns / improvements with emphasis on product material and composition
  • Using engineering analysis and data collection to propose appropriate disposition for products that are not conforming to specifications.


Working Conditions

  • Moderate lifting of components
  • Exposure to chemicals/etchants
  • Destructive analysis tools including saws
  • ~ 5 hour OT / week, with need to work unexpected overtime as issues arise.
  • Limited supplier and international travel
