Description:

We are seeking an Engineer to provide a wide range of electrical engineering expertise to our fleet of power generating facilities. The ideal candidate will have 5-10 years of experience in power generation or manufacturing with a focus on heavy electrical equipment or controls. The Engineer will be responsible for supporting all facilities within our fleet, providing technical support for electrical issues, overseeing NERC compliance, assisting with regional ISO technical requests, and supporting development projects. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and a combination of strong field engineering, troubleshooting, and project management experience. This position will involve working closely with individuals at all levels of the organization, from corporate executives to plant staff and regulatory agencies. Reporting to the Sr. Director Plant Performance, this role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the success and growth of our company.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Provide expertise in High Voltage Electrical equipment, such as transformers, switchgear, controls, relays, and transmission equipment.
  • Provide Engineering support for technical information requests from NEISO, NYISO, and PJM.
  • Oversee NERC compliance at all facilities and manage our O&M service provider to ensure day-to-day compliance.
  • Support Solar and Battery Energy Storage Development activities, specifically focusing on electrical interconnections.
  • Prepare project analysis, budgets, schedules, and plans.
  • Develop engineering deliverables for projects and major equipment procurement, such as power transformers and circuit breakers.
  • Create equipment and construction specifications.
  • Analyze bids and make recommendations for equipment and constructor selection.
  • Investigate and conduct root cause analysis of underperforming plant areas or systems and propose solutions for improvement.
  • Support day-to-day operational activities, outage work, and new projects.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal safety regulations and construction codes.
  • Assist with construction, equipment testing, and commissioning.
  • Coordinate and provide technical assistance for SCADA, substation, and control projects to integrate protection, control, and monitoring systems.
  • This position may require travel to various sites as needed (approximately 5% of the time).

Qualifications:

  • 5-10 years of experience in power generation or manufacturing with a focus on heavy electrical equipment.
  • Familiarity with common failure modes and non-destructive testing methods for generators, transformers, cables, and other plant components.
  • Understanding of power plant auxiliary power distribution systems, electrical materials, and test procedures.
  • Proficient knowledge of utility grid systems (generation, transmission, and distribution).
  • Knowledge of protection principles and practices for transmission lines, distribution feeders, and major plant and substation equipment.
  • Ability to interpret relaying one-lines and control schematics.
  • Experience with electrical, protection and control design schematics, SCADA systems, and station automation design.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes and standards such as NEC, NESC, IEEE, NEMA, and ANSI.
  • Experience with medium and high voltage equipment, including transformers, switchgear, breakers, power cables, generators, motors, MCCs, power panels, and buss-work.
  • Preferred experience in the design and implementation of medium and high voltage distribution/transmission projects in urban environments.Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • High level of computer and internet competency.
  • Proficiency in using Windows-based software programs.
  • Engineering Degree preferred, but not required.
  • Preferred experience with regional RTOs (NYISO, PJM, NEISO), electrical system modeling, relay coordination, short circuit studies, and NYISO interconnect studies.
  • Experience with NERC standards is a plus.
